Training for Class 5

Starting April 1, 2023, completing the advanced road test is no longer necessary for leaving the Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program. To qualify for exiting the GDL program, drivers must meet the following conditions:

  • They must be a minimum of 18 years of age.
  • They must have finished a 24-month probationary driving phase. This can be reduced by a maximum of 6 months if the driver has completed a Class 5 driver training course at an endorsed certified driver insurance reduction course training institution.
  • They must have maintained a record clear of suspensions and demerits over the previous 12 months.

For drivers urgently needing to leave the GDL program (for example, due to job requirements), they may consult their local registry as to their eligibility. If the registry agent verifies their eligibility, the driver's GDL license will be replaced with a non-GDL license without charge. Drivers who have not yet met the eligibility conditions will stay in the GDL program, complying with their driver's license restrictions until they satisfy the necessary criteria.

A new IT system will be introduced on June 25, 2023, designed to automatically evaluate a GDL driver's qualification for program departure. Qualified drivers will be automatically removed from the GDL program and informed of their updated non-GDL status. These drivers can expect a letter from the Government of Alberta in July 2023, verifying their program exit. Until the driver either acquires their Class 5 license from a registry agent or obtains the July 2023 letter from the Government of Alberta confirming their GDL program exit, GDL license restrictions will persist.

Class 5 road tests have been updated to include components from the advanced road test. The Class 5 road test duration has been extended from 30 minutes to 45 minutes, emphasizing a focus on safety. All other ongoing GDL program stipulations will stay in effect.
